Ross Lewis: Dancing with Rope

The Today Art Museum, Beijing

July - August 2021

Dancing with Rope at the Today Art Museum (TAM) is the celebrated American artist Ross Lewis’ inaugural academic solo exhibition in China. Lewis is an artist and arts educator who is internationally recognized for creating art that engages with the Chinese literati tradition. Showcasing approximately fifty works, this exhibition includes the artist’s most recent Rope Painting Series in which the Ross replaces the traditional brush for a more reactive and dynamic instrument: ropes dipped in ink. Dancing with Rope occupies TAM’s main exhibition hall, and includes a video installation, Lewis’ monumental rope-painted handscroll, several Chinese-landscape inspired paintings, as well as archival materials of Lewis’ early studies with Chinese painters in Taiwan and China. During the exhibition period, the artist will also provide an in-person demonstration of his innovative technique and offer art educational programs to local students. The exhibition is produced in partnership with the US Embassy of Beijing.
